A definition, without the jargon
Travel operations outsourcing is the practice of handing the operational steps around a travel product to a specialist partner, who runs them with their own people, processes and technology.
That can mean handling enquiries, following up quotes, managing changes and after-sales, or running the whole operation end to end. The common thread is that the travel business keeps ownership of its product and brand, while the partner owns the process and the delivery.
What it usually includes
A typical engagement covers several of the following:
- Response and qualification of enquiries at every step.
- Follow-up on quotes and warm enquiries.
- Support for ancillaries and add-ons.
- Post-booking support, changes and documentation.
- Reporting on service, response times and outcomes.
When it makes sense
It tends to pay off when enquiries are rising faster than your team, when seasonal peaks strain capacity, or when the cost and time of hiring and training travel specialists internally is hard to justify.
The clearest sign is a gap between the demand you generate and the service you can deliver. If the demand exists but delivery does not, the process is usually the constraint — not the market.
